CHILDREN'S LIBRARIAN - FROM THE DESK OF ERIN BOHM
What is the SUMMER READING PROGRAM?
Each year a nonprofit, charitable organization called the Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) provides libraries across the nation with a shared theme and beautiful, free, graphic art & media by an American artist. It supports families in engaging with a self-run summer reading challenge called the Summer Reading Program (SRP). CSLP began in 1987 when ten Minnesota regional library systems developed a summer library program for children that public libraries could use to support literacy throughout the summer. It continues to this day, assisting librarians in sharing ideas, expertise and costs to produce a high-quality summer reading program for all.
The Mancos Public library provides families with SRP reading logs and other materials that children use to track and increase their summer reading. We also provide prizes as incentives for children to complete 15 minute blocks of reading - each time they do, they fill in a spot in their reading log. Each completed line earns them a prize!
To further support the SRP, we also provide a weekly, drop-in, all- ages event that connects to the annual theme. This event also helps families to schedule weekly time at the library when they can bring reading logs in to collect prizes and encourage their kiddos to stay engaged with reading. Each Friday, 9:00-10:00 am, June 27 - July 25, we have performers, entertainers, scientists and special guests! See the performer schedule for more information!

What is the SUMMER FRIDAYS @ THE LIBRARY program?
During the academic year, the library offers a three-quarter-day program called Fridays @ the Library; children move from one activity to the next, doing everything from science to art! During the summer, we continue this tradition with one difference: the first hour of the day (9-10 am) is dedicated to the Summer Reading Program! From there, kids who are registered to spend the morning with us carry on to other activities until pick up at 12pm. This program requires weekly registration and runs June 27 - July 25. Registration begins June 23: www.mancoslibrary.org/for-kids/
